I made some delicious treats for Nolan's class yesterday for a little Happy Halloween gift. I used the same recipe on sugar cookies I made last year for Valentine's Day, and they were such a hit, it will be my forever go to recipe for fool-proof cutout cookies!
The recipe:
Vanilla-Almond Sugar Cookies
3 c unbleached, all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 c sugar (Recommend using sugar that vanilla beans have been stored in)
2 sticks butter
1 egg
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp pure almond extract
Preheat oven to 350.
Combine the flour and baking powder, set aside. Cream the sugar and butter. Add the egg and extracts and mix. Gradually add the flour mixture and beat just until combined, scraping down the bowl, especially the bottom.
Roll onto a floured surface and cut into shapes. Place on parchment lined baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes. Let sit a few minutes on the sheet, then transfer to a cooling rack.
For the icing, I used a tub of Duncan Hines Creamy Home-Style Buttercream frosting and added 4 drops of red and 6 drops of yellow food coloring (you may have to play with it a bit to get the exact orange you want).
I used green gum drops cut in half for the stems.

The finished product:
Happy Halloween!
